Scenes from the Bush: Mbulia Hills, Kenya
When travelers say they want ‘off the beaten path’, send them to Kipalo Camp! Situated on the 12,000 acre Mbulia Conservancy adjacent to Tsavo West National Park in Kenya, Kipalo is a shining example of community based tourism. The area is an essential dry-season dispersal area for over 700 elephant, but the community saw poaching on the rise and asked for help protecting the habitat. Four years later, Kipalo Camp exists and employs 12 game scouts from the local community to patrol the conservancy. Their efforts make a monumental difference to the local wildlife, even the elusive African Wild Dog, whose presence typically signify a healthy environment, are returning to the area. Conservation fees from paying guests at Kipalo go toward the running of the anti-poaching patrols and the protection wildlife, and bed-nights fees are paid to the community for social projects.
