Giving Back Through the Savanna Trust
Every single member of the KAI Collection gives back to the communities or environments where they operate. Savanna Private Game Reserve in the Sabi Sand Game Reserve, South Africa, has established the Savanna Trust to oversee various projects the lodge supports in neighboring communities. Managed by Rinske Stege, the Trust has focused on helping the most vulnerable of the local citizens–children and the elderly. At the Tiyimiseleni Centre, 250 AIDS orphans are fed daily by the Trust and many other services are provided to make that happen such as purchasing dry goods, fuel for cooking, uniforms for the kitchen staff, and providing electricity to the centre. Recent projects include the completion of a new play area for the children and the expansion of the garden plot (photos below). The Tiyimiseleni Centre is just a 15 minute drive from Savanna should guests wish to visit the orphans.
Rinske has this to say about the Trust’s connection with an elderly care facility, “It remains an absolute pleasure to visit Hlayisekani Nursing Home. Nyiko and his staff must be real angels if you look at the way they take care of the elderly people living there. Even though they don’t have direct access to running water, the place is always spotlessly clean and people sleep under clean sheets every day. The building is far from ideal, so we hope to build them something more comfortable as soon as we can get the funds together.”
Another development is that Savanna is now frequently using local entrepreneurs from surrounding villages to supply and help the lodge with various items. Fresh vegetables are purchased from a local farm; a local lady does all the sewing work; another company transports staff to their villages; and a local shop supplies homemade jewelry to the shop. It is wonderful to see all of these local people busy and becoming successful.
Guests can help by bringing supplies via Pack for a Purpose or they can contribute to the Savanna Trust. To help fund a new building for the elderly, support orphans, or local entrepreneurs which help create the Savanna experience, please contact Rinkse at firstname.lastname@example.org.
Andrew Finn Joins KAI
Kartagener Associates Inc. is proud to announce the newest member of our sales team, Mr. Andrew Finn. Andrew is the new National Sales Manager for Asia, based in KAI’s New York office. His main role is to grow new business relationships with industry partners as well as streamline communication with existing partners.
A native of Buffalo, New York, Andrew caught the travel bug on a family trip to Europe when he was twelve. The fascination with other cultures has led him to work with guests from all over the world at a hotel in Yellowstone National Park and then embark on a six-month solo backpacking journey through South America. Our intrepid traveler bought a one-way ticket to Bogota, Colombia and meandered his way through Colombia, Ecuador, Uruguay, Argentina, and Chile. Always seeking a new adventure, Andrew landed in New York City where he turned his passion into a profession by starting a career in travel. Join us in welcoming Andrew to KAI!
The completion of the new and improved Victoria Falls Airport in Zimbabwe has been extended to December 31, 2015. Work on the new terminal, extended runway, control tower, road network, and parking area is about 90% complete according to the CAAZ Head of Customer Services–the company overseeing the project. Tour operators are excited for the opening as it will allow more direct flights into the region from further afield.
At mid-month, the Kenya government announced that it will still allow for manual visa applications until certain challenges experienced by the exclusive e-visa process were addressed. Even though manual visas are available upon arrival, visitors are still encouraged to use the e-visa system. This will help identify any deficiencies in the system and help improve it. Click here for further information and to apply for an e-visa. Contact our KAI partners in Kenya for safari planning for your travelers!
