Scenes from the Bush: Royal Zambezi Lodge
KAI President, Henry Kartagener, spent a few days in Zambia’s Lower Zambezi National Park this month. As a guest of the five-star Royal Zambezi Lodge (RZL), he enjoyed luxurious amenities and diverse activities including world-class fishing and exploring the river by canoe. RZL is the only lodge in the area that stays open year round and the guides are intimately familiar with the subtle changes throughout the year in the surrounding environment.
In addition to the outstanding accommodation, service, and cuisine, Henry had this to say about the wildlife viewing, “On the way back to the lodge we encountered a pride of 12 lions hunting. We spent over an hour with them and it was quite incredible. We left the lions and drove about 3 minutes at which time we found a leopard. As it was getting late we had to move on and drove about 300 yards where we encountered another leopard hunting. We stayed for a few moments and really had to go. We proceeded about 5 minutes and found a third leopard stalking a herd of impala. Oh, I forgot to mention the herd of buffalo we passed as well as the many herds of elephant. Just another day in the Lower Zambezi!”

A chance meeting on a flight from Johannesburg has inspired KAI to adopt The Wonderbag as our corporate social responsibility project. This genius little bag is changing the world one meal at a time. Here’s how…
The Wonderbag is a simple, but revolutionary, slow-cooker. It continues to cook food that has been brought to a boil by conventional methods, without the additional use of fuel. No plugs. No fuss. With a Wonderbag you can cook nearly any slow-cooked recipe from meaty stews and vegetable curries to simple rice and soups. You kick-start the cooking process by heating your pot of food on the stove, then simply place it in the Wonderbag. You can take your slow-cooked favorites anywhere. Perfect for potlucks, camping, barbequing and tailgating!
And because the Wonderbag is unplugged, your free time will also be worry-free!
Heat-retention cooking is an age-old technique and Wonderbag’s fun and unique design has brought it back into the 21st century! The slowed cooking process, combined with sealing the pot in the Wonderbag, ensures the flavors and nutrients are retained inside the pot – not evaporated into thin air.
In Africa, Wonderbag can:
- Save 30% of annual household income – saving money and easing poverty
- It reduces CO2 emissions
- Less deforestation because families need less firewood to cook
- It reduces toxic fumes which means less respiratory problems and other diseases, particularly in children
- It reduces time spent cooking, giving more time for child-care and other activities
- It saves precious water. When the pot is insulated in a Wonderbag at a fairly constant temperature, less evaporation occurs, so less water is needed
- It saves food. 20% of all staple food in Africa is burned, due to pots being placed on open fires and unregulated stove tops. With Wonderbag, no burning occurs
For every Wonderbag sold in the United States, one will be donated to a family in Africa. Buy yours now on Amazon.com or donate one to families in need for as little as $15!
