Save Zambezi, Safe Zambezi

A KAI Foundation Initiative

At KAI, we are proud to support causes about which we are passionate and take action when something needs to be done. We believe that the travel industry is full of people and companies much like us.

So, we’re asking for your help. The Zambian people have started a petition to stop mining in the Lower Zambezi National Park. The national park is an integral part of the Zambezi Basin, the region’s most significant shared resource that contributes to the economic, environmental and social development of more than 250-million people southern Africa.

The Zambian Environmental Management Agency (ZEMA) recently approved to allow for mining in the Lower Zambezi National Park. The mine will not only risk contaminating water for communities in Zambia, Zimbabwe and Mozambique but for the whole Zambezi delta, destroying rivers, farming and fishing livelihoods, and one of the largest tourism destinations for Zambia and Zimbabwe.

Eco-tourism in the area depends largely on the renewable wildlife and habitat resources and contributes significantly to the local and national economies around the Lower Zambezi National Park. Tourism establishments in the park and surrounding areas employ more than 1,000 local people, generating a local wage  of $4 million annually that indirectly supports thousands more people at a local community level. River pollution caused by the mine could threaten the Zambezi River’s 2,000-ton subsistence fishery, which provides food and protein security to 20,000 people along the river’s banks.

When we learned of this, we knew that the people in our industry would want to act with us to help stop this mine before the people of this region suffer from its consequences. Please sign the petition to block this mining.

We know that with the help of our colleagues, clients, partners, and friends, we can make an impact. We started the KAI Foundation in 2015, after being in business for 20 years, with a goal in mind to give back to the communities that give us so much. Since then, we’ve built a maternity ward in Zambia, staffed the maternity ward with a nurse, built a doctor’s quarters, providing 20,000 people in the area with a full-time doctor and nurse. We’ve raised over $7,500 for anti-poaching efforts in Uganda, we’re currently in the process of building a school in Cambodia, and now we’re fighting with the Zambian people in preventing mining across Africa’s most prized National Park.
